New sales figures, slideshow

A new, retrospective catalog from Penn State Press, prepared to commemorate its fiftieth anniversary, lists Outbound Journeys in Pennsylvania as its bestseller in the Keystone Books imprint, with over 10,000 copies sold since its publication in 1987. The sequel, More Outbound Journeys in Pennsylvania, hasn’t sold as well — only 3000+ — probably because people who’d bought the first book didn’t realize the second one wasn’t simply a new edition, but was in fact a second volume, with descriptions of 49 additional places. Both books remain in print and can be ordered here and here.

Needless to say, we’re all very proud, and Mom gave me permission to step out from behind the curtain here as site administrator and brag about it. It’s worth pointing out that the first Outbound Journeys volume was released at a time when the press was in a bit of a disarray, and they had no marketing director whatsoever. We’re not sure what lesson to take from that.

In other Marcia Bonta-related news, she’s just added a new slide show to her repertoire, bringing the total to six. “Coming Home: A Cultural and Natural History of the Ridge-and-Valley Province” is the presentation she prepared for the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) conference at Penn State earlier this month, where she was one of the featured speakers.
