Hi Alan, I wish I lived there too, but we're too invested here. It is so discouraging to see how the natural beauty that Pennsylvania has is being sucked away by the natural gas industry north of us. Few people seem to know or care about habitat fragmentation, let alone air and water pollution and those who do are labeled environmentalist extremists. I never thought we would come to this here.

I lived in Arbuckle from 1948 to 1960.
Arbuckle is about one mile south of Lake Pleasant. During summer vacation it was a daily ritual to ride my bike to the lake and and spend the afternoon swimming. Vern Myers, owner of the Allied Trades Club built a refreshment stand on the bank of the lake, had two or three docks close to the stand and rented row boats. One summer, maybe two, he built a raft that was anchored about twenty feet away from the end of the docks. It had a platform about five feet above the raft that was great for diving. After I got myu driver's license the lake was an after work destination (farm hand, hauling hay and loading potatoes, dirty, sweaty work). There was nothing better or more refreshing than plunging into the cool water of Lake Pleasant and 'washing the stink off.' Now a days that would probably be frowned upon, but then it was just a normal part of living. My dad was an avid fisherman. He fished from a rowboat for perch and blue gills. He would stop on the way home from his second shift job and fish for bass with a jitterbug lure. He caught them often enough that he stopped a couple nights a week all summer long for several years hoping to catch more. I am glad that the Conservancy has gotten involved. The lake was pristine during my time there and it is good to preserve it for future generations.

I'm glad you have happy memories of the place. I do too and so have no intention of returning and seeing what shale gas drilling has done to Dimock and its surroundings. I understand Woodbourne is more or less surrounded by the industry.

As I have been going through my storage boxes recently, I thought about the book Driftwood Valley which I knew I had purchased at a used book shop near Mansfield, PA. I suddenly found it late last night and was very delighted.
I had lived near Dimock, Pennsylvania and attended grade school at Dimock in the mid-1940s. Our class had a visit to the virgin woods of The Woodbourne Forest and Wildlife Sanctuary very near to the school, and that visit has stayed in my heart ever since. I also went on the tour as an adult about twenty years ago. It was so peaceful.
The tour included a little jaunt on the grounds near the home, and the daffodils were simply magnificent!
